Centre bounce re-start rule (1956-57) - if scores were level at the end of the final quarter (including time-on) timekeepers were instructed to sound the siren and the ball would return to the centre where play was re-started and continued until one of the teams scored. Although never used this rule was thought to be unfair because a team could have the ball in their goalsquare when the final siren sounded, only to lose possession (and the game) after play was re-started.
Next score wins rule (1958-89) - if scores were level at the end of the final quarter (including time-on) timekeepers were instructed to let play continue, not sounding the siren until one of the teams scored. This system was utilised just twice during this era:
1968 Richmond d. Footscray - the very first VFL-AFL match to go to extra time. Scores were level at the end of time-on so play continued until the deadlock was broken. A mere 11 seconds into extra-time a set-shot by Royce Hart was rushed through for a behind and the siren was sounded. The Sun reports that neither team knew the first score would win.
1970 Fitzroy d. Geelong by 1 point (not shown in the above table) - AFL Records have this match being won by sudden-death extra-time. Newspaper match reports all have Fitzroy winning by a rushed behind in the final minute of play.
1989 West Coast d. Hawthorn - West Coast trailed by two goals late in the final quarter when two long bombs from Eagles' ruckman Laurie Keene levelled the scores with seconds to go. Scores were still level at the end of time-on so play was allowed to continue 95 seconds into extra-time when Paul Peos slotted a behind from half-forward and the siren sounded.
Ten-minutes of extra-time rule (1990-2013) - two 5 minutes halves to be played (with no time-on), and teams changed ends after the first half ended. Coaches were not permitted on the ground to talk to their players before or during extra-time. Note, by 1994 this rule had been modified slightly to include time-on.
1990 Essendon d. Fitzroy - Paul Salmon kicked a goal after the final siren to level the scores and send the match to extra-time. According to The Age match report this left "both sides and their coaches in total confusion". Hundreds of spectators ran on to the field and Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy successfully formed a huddle and addressed his team. Fitzroy coach Rod Austin attempted to charge onto the field to follow suit but was blocked by the umpires.
Early in the first five-minute period Simon Madden goaled to give Essendon their first lead of the entire match. The siren sounded and spectators, believing the match was finally over, again charged on to the arena. The second period of extra-time was scoreless with Fitzroy constantly trying to drive the ball forward and Essendon content to continually hit the boundary and run down the clock.
1994 Richmond d. St Kilda - St Kilda gamely defended their six-point lead throughout the last five minutes of the final quarter, only to surrender the levelling goal to Richmond's Wayne Hernaman with 80 seconds left in the match. With just eight seconds to go a Richmond kick deep inside 50 went out of bounds on the full and the match went to extra-time.
St Kilda coach Stan Alves followed the rules and remained in the coach's box but Richmond coach John Northey headed down to the field and, when umpires were distracted, sprinted onto the field to address his players. Much to his frustration, umpires dashed over and directed Northey back to the boundary line. The Tigers dominated extra-time, Matthew Dundas kicking a goal four minutes into the first half followed by two goals to Mathew Richardson in the opening minutes of the second half; Richmond winning by 20 points.
1994 Adelaide d. West Coast - the lead changed four times during a tense last quarter but the Crows looked to have sealed it when Tony Modra kicked his sixth goal at the 27-minute mark. With seconds to play, West Coast forward Peter Wilson fired a long shot from 50 metres out and the ball eluded two Crows defenders and levelled the scores, sending the game to extra-time.
Adelaide peppered the goals throughout extra-time and West Coast were held scoreless. Both teams failed to score a goal in the first period of extra-time but Tony Modra broke the drought with a goal a minute into the second period. Minutes later Shaun Rehn sealed the match for Adelaide with another goal and the Crows were home by 19 points.
2011 Essendon drew with St Kilda - from 2011 to 2013 the AFL adopted a lightning premiership format for the opening round of the pre-season competition, splitting the eighteen clubs into six groups of three. Each group played a round robin series of shortened matches (consisting of two twenty minute halves), which allowed a group's three matches to be played over a three-hour period at one venue. Due to these time restrictions no extra-time was played in the opening round, but was in place for later rounds of the competition.
