1980 AFC ESCORT CHAMPIONSHIPS

In May 1979 the NFL, the SANFL and the AFC held a summit which resulted in the NFL agreeing to end their night series and the SANFL formally announcing they would move to the AFC competition in 1980.

The QAFL soon followed suit but the VFA were not welcome in the new VFL-dominated competition and were once again forced off the national stage.

The 1980 AFC series was Australia's first truly-national football competition and ran along similar lines to British soccer's F.A. Cup with lower ranked teams advancing through qualifying rounds, earning the right to face the top teams in the main draw.

A total of thirty-four top level teams from across Australia played 33 matches over five months, with the qualifying rounds held during the pre-season and the main draw held midweek throughout the premiership season.

The qualifying rounds were played across the country and saw a number of VFL teams travel interstate to play on enemy territory; standard operating procedure in today's AFL competition but a foreign concept for these clubs back in 1980.

Picture
1980 Grand Final programme (private collection)
Five Victorian clubs headed interstate during this series - Carlton and Hawthorn to Perth, Footscray to Brisbane, Richmond to Sydney and South Melbourne to Adelaide - with Carlton finding themselves on the wrong end of a 91-point shellacking from South Fremantle in front of 6,000 jubilant Fremantle locals.

Regardless, the 1980 series was still heavily-stacked in the VFL's favour with the VFL's top six teams entering directly into the main draw, compared to the SANFL and the WAFL's top two (the VFL ultimately had 10 teams in the main draw, compared to three each from SA and WA).

This imbalance, combined with all but one of the matches in the main draw being held in Melbourne, virtually guaranteed an all-VFL final. Claremont were the sole interstate team to break-up the party, advancing through qualifying then making three trips east; posting impressive wins over Geelong and Hawthorn before succumbing to North Melbourne in the semi-finals.

Collingwood's run to the final mobilised the Magpie army and a massive crowd of 50,478 flocked to Waverley for the Grand Final. The combined effect of these crowds, healthy television ratings and a highly-controversial end to the final (see Notable Events below) ensured the series was a success and guaranteed another year of national football in 1981.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

The competition expanded from 23 to 34 teams in 1980 (all 12 VFL clubs, all 10 SANFL clubs, all 8 WAFL clubs + Tasmania, Queensland, N.S.W. and the A.C.T.) so a second qualifying round was added to the draw.

Clubs were ranked based on their ladder position in their respective competitions the previous year.

ROUND 1 (QUALIFYING)

Winning teams (indicated below in bold) advanced to the second round of qualifying, losing teams were eliminated.

VFL
Teams that finished 7th-12th in 1979 - Hawthorn (7th) / Richmond (8th) / Footscray (9th) / Sth Melb. (10th) / Melbourne (11th) / St Kilda (12th)
SANFL

ROUND 2 (QUALIFYING)

Winning teams (indicated below in bold) advanced to the main draw, losing teams were eliminated.

VFL

ROUND 3 (MAIN DRAW)

The top VFL, SANFL and WAFL teams entered the competition and were joined by the surviving teams from qualifying (4 VFL, 1 SANFL, 1 WAFL).
Winning teams advanced to the quarter finals, losing teams were eliminated.

VFL
Teams that finished 1st-6th in 1979 - Carlton (1st) / Collingwood (2nd) / North Melbourne (3rd) / Fitzroy (4th) / Essendon (5th) / Geelong (6th)
+ four qualifiers - Hawthorn (7th) / Richmond (8th) / Footscray (9th) / St Kilda (12th)

SANFL
Teams that finished 1st-2nd in 1979 - Port Adelaide (1st) / South Adelaide (2nd)
+ one qualifier - Glenelg (7th)

WAFL
Teams that finished 1st-2nd in 1979 - East Fremantle (1st) / South Fremantle (2nd)
+ one qualifier - Claremont (3rd)

QUARTER FINALS / SEMI FINALS / GRAND FINAL

Straight knockout format: all winners advanced and losing teams were eliminated.
Claremont, the WAFL's third-ranked team, became the second non-VFL team to reach the semi-finals of the AFC competition
(the first was East Perth in 1979).

NOTABLE EVENTS

*Magpies swoop on Waverley - the record crowd for a night series match had been set in 1979 when 37,753 fans watched Collingwood defeat Hawthorn in the final. That record was well and truly surpassed in 1980 when a crowd of 50,478 - bolstered again by the Magpie Army - descended on Waverley for the Grand Final between Collingwood and North Melbourne.

*North Melbourne steal the flag - the final moments of the 1980 Escort Championships remain one of the most controversial finishes to a game in Australian football history.

North Melbourne trailed by 3 points when the final siren sounded but the umpires failed to hear it, allowing play to continue. North's Malcolm Blight ran through the centre and passed to Kerry Good who went back to take his shot as fans jumped the fence and stormed the field. At this point umpires finally heard the siren and signalled the end of play.

Despite Collingwood supporters running towards Good and trying to put him off his kick he calmly slotted the winning goal from 30 metres, gifting North Melbourne an unlikely win.

*Bulldogs unveil a new look - in 1979 Footscray had become the first team in VFL-AFL history to wear a special night series/pre-season jumper. In 1980 they followed-up with another new design that borrowed heavily from the Camberwell Football Club worn in the VFA at that time (see image at right).

*Hawks survive the heat - one of the notable events of the 1979 series had been Essendon surviving a 38 degree Perth day to defeat Swan Districts.

Almost a year to the day later, it was Hawthorn's turn; the Hawks overcoming West Perth and a 38 degree scorcher at Perth Oval.

*Goals galore - more games meant more goals with three forwards in particular taking advantage during the 1980 series:

- Michael Roach (Richmond): 9 goals vs New South Wales
- Ross Brewer (Collingwood): 7 goals vs Essendon
- Tony Morwood (South Melb.): 7 goals vs West Adelaide

Picture
West Perth v Hawthorn programme (Sean Cowan collection)
Picture
Footscray's 1980 Night Series uniform (footyjumpers.com)
*Leading goalkicker of the series - three players tied for series honours with 13 goals apiece: Phil Krakouer (Claremont), Leigh Matthews (Hawthorn) and Michael Roach (Richmond). Krakouer played five games in the series, Matthews and Roach each played four.

*Thrashings aplenty - prior to the 1980 series their had been only three wins of 80 points or more in series history, and two of those had come in 1979 (Fitzroy-Richmond, 85 points in 1959; North Melbourne-A.C.T., 110 points in 1979; Richmond-Subiaco, 84 points in 1979).

However, the advent of cross-country away games and matches played in unfamiliar territory led to the floodgates opening in 1980, with five hidings delivered during the series:
  • 105 points - Hawthorn d. East Fremantle
  • 102 points - Claremont d. East Perth
  • 91 points - South Fremantle d. Carlton
  • 82 points - Melbourne d. Swan Districts
  • 80 points - Richmond d. Woodville

Hawthorn's 105-point win over East Fremantle was especially surprising as Easts were the reigning WAFL premier. They never seemed to recover from the Hawthorn loss; suffering a 111-point thrashing from Swan Districts in their season-opener the following weekend and eventually finishing the WAFL season second last with just five wins for the year.
