1985 AFC FOSTER'S FOOTBALL CUP
*Dunstall debuts... twice - it's well-known that Hawthorn's champion goalkicker Jason Dunstall made his VFL-AFL debut in 1985. What's been forgotten is he actually made his debut not in a Hawthorn jumper, but in Queensland colours.
The then 18-year-old kicked four* of Queensland's 10 goals in their Foster's Cup qualifying match against St Kilda then shortly afterwards signed with the Hawks, making his premiership debut less than a month later and kicking two goals in Hawthorn's first game of the 1985 Night Series (a 19-point win over Port Adelaide). Dunstall's Queensland teammate, Scott McIvor was snapped-up in the days following the Foster's Cup qualifying match, making his senior debut for Fitzroy in their opening Night Series match on April 30 versus Swan Districts. *[NOTE - these four goals are currently missing from Dunstall's record tally of Night Series-Pre-Season Cup goals] *Swans out of exile - Swan Districts returned to the competition after serving their two-year ban for fielding a Reserves-Colts team against Richmond in the 1982 Night Series. |
*Grand Final B.O.G. - Hawthorn's Robert Dipierdomenico received a portable cassette player for being best on ground in the Grand Final [The Age 24-7-1985] - eight seasons before the Michael Tuck Medal was first awarded.
*Football Park goal-fest - today Dwayne Russell and Dermott Brereton are commentators for rival broadcasters, but on April 16, 1985 at Football Park they were rivals in a goalkicking shootout; Brereton kicking 7 for Hawthorn and Russell kicking 7 for Port Adelaide.
Other big hauls in the 1985 series were:
- Greg Burns (St Kilda) 8 goals vs Queensland
- Shane Halas (Fitzroy) 8 goals vs Swan Districts
- Richard Osborne (Fitzroy) 7 goals vs Footscray
*Leading goalkicker of the series - Richard Osborne (Fitzroy) led all scorers with 14 goals from 3 games.
*St Kilda gets payback - for the second successive year a qualification match was played between Queensland (the winner of the Escort Shield contested by the developing states) and St Kilda (the last-placed team in the VFL premiership). In 1984 St Kilda had escaped Brisbane with a lucky 11-point win but this time they crushed the Maroons by 96 points to advance to the first round of the Night Series.
*Extra game at Football Park - two opening round matches were again scheduled for Football Park in Adelaide. After Norwood won their opening round clash against Geelong, their quarter final against Essendon was transferred from VFL Park to Football Park.

NOTES: |
||||||||||||
Originally
scheduled for June 4 but pushed back a day due to Collingwood playing Footscray
in a premiership match on Sunday, June 2. |
||||||||||||
The
postponement allowed Collingwood a three-day break and had little effect on
either side the following weekend because both were |
||||||||||||
scheduled
to play on the Monday of the VFL split round. |
