1983 AFC STERLING CUP

*Blues' hoodoo ends - Carlton finally won their first night flag after playing in five losing grand finals (1956/58/65/77/81). They were the last of the VFL clubs to win a night premiership.

*Johnston steps-in - Carlton's captain Mike Fitzpatrick did not play in the Grand Final due to injury. With vice-captain Geoff Southby also out, Wayne Johnston was notified just 10 minutes before taking the field that he would be acting captain for the night.

*Grand Final postponed - the final was originally scheduled for July 19 but was cancelled five hours before the opening bounce due to a waterlogged field and predictions of further heavy rain. It was played the following week.

*Tassie's turn - a qualification match was played in Hobart between Tasmania (the winner of the 1982 Escort Shield contested by the developing states – TAS, QLD, NSW, ACT) and Footscray (the last-placed team in the 1982 VFL premiership). Footscray won and advanced to the first round of the Night Series.

Picture
1983 qualifying round match - Tasmania vs Footscray (Joe Boyar collection)
*Swans sidelined - Swan Districts were in the first season of a two-year ban for fielding a Reserves-Colts line-up against Richmond in the 1982 Night Series.

Had they finished outside the WAFL top two in 1982 or 1983 the ban would have been meaningless. However, they won their league premiership both years, so the ban ultimately cost them a chance to win significant prizemoney on the national stage. Their place in the 1983 Sterling Cup was taken by West Perth (1982 WAFL 3rd).

*Parity returns - after a large number of blowout wins each season since the competition went national in 1979, the 1983 series was relatively close. The only walkover was Footscray's 108-point thrashing of Tasmania in the qualifying round.

*Lokan in demand - the start of the Carlton-Fitzroy match was delayed 5 minutes as lawyers and officials finalised the transfer of Bill Lokan from North Adelaide to Fitzroy. He had been issued a permit to play but the SANFL lodged a late appeal delaying the process.

*Daicos magic - Peter Daicos (Collingwood) kicked 7 goals against Claremont in the opening round.

*Leading goalkicker - Jim Jess (Richmond) led all scorers with 12 goals from 4 games.

EMERGENCIES

For June 19th both teams refused to name their final line-up - instead Carlton named a squad of 25 and Richmond a squad of 29.

The following week Carlton announced their full line-up but Richmond persisted with the gamesmanship, naming a squad of 23.

Carlton's captain Mike Fitzpatrick did not play due to injury. With vice-captain Geoff Southby also out, Wayne Johnston was notified

just 10 minutes before taking the field that he would be acting captain for the night.
