ABOUT

ABOUT THE 1977 SERIES

The NFL's first national competition in 1976 had proven a success and as early as June that year the NFL confirmed plans to increase the competition from a round-robin format involving 12 teams to a five-round knockout tournament featuring 32 teams.

This new series would be Australian football's first truly national competition, featuring all of the VFL, SANFL, and WAFL clubs plus state representative teams from Tasmania, Queensland, New South Wales, and the ACT. [Canberra Times, 18-6-1976, p.18]

Not only had the 1976 Wills Cup been well attended but it had also generated surprisingly strong television ratings; the latter alerting football administrators, particularly those at the Victorian Football League (VFL), to the increased marketing possibilities and revenue that could be generated by a national broadcasting deal.

The NFL's dreams of a national competition were shattered when the VFL announced they were withdrawing from the 1977 competition to form their own rival night series, the Amco-Herald Cup.

Their series would be based at the League's headquarters, VFL Park and new light towers would be constructed specifically for the event. The series would be broadcast by the Channel Seven network and contested by the 12 League teams, with plans for future expansion.

Picture
SANFL administrators reacted angrily to the VFL's move, banning any of the SANFL clubs from playing their VFL counterparts; ceasing representative matches against Victoria and playing a number of pre-season trial games against VFA clubs instead (state games against Victoria would eventually resume in October 1978, with trial games against VFL clubs resuming in March 1979).

The NFL were forced to downgrade their plans for the series, reducing the number of teams involved to 22 and inviting the Victorian Football Association to enter their top four teams, a surprising move considering the VFA's expulsion from the NFL (then known as the ANFC) in 1970.

The 1977 series was again based at Norwood Oval in suburban Adelaide, with a handful of matches played in Perth at Leederville Oval, Claremont Oval and Lathlain Park, and in Melbourne at the Lake Oval, home ground of the South Melbourne VFL club and former home of the VFL Night Series.

W.D. and H.O. Wills continued as naming rights sponsor and the competition was renamed the NFL-Ardath Cup in order to promote one of Wills' leading cigarette brands; prize money was increased to $130,000 with the winning team receiving $30,000.

FORMAT

SERIES FORMAT

The tournament consisted of 5 rounds, all played on a knockout basis, with the lower-ranked clubs entering in Round 1,
which was a qualifying round.

The higher-ranked clubs bypassed this stage, entering the competition in Round 2 and playing against the clubs that had
survived qualifying.

EVENTS

NOTABLE EVENTS

WHITE OR YELLOW FOOTBALLS?
Since the first night matches in 1879 a white football had been the standard. However, the 1977 VFL Night Series was the first competition to adopt a yellow football for night play (the only documented use prior to this was a 1950 Western Australian state team night practice match when yellow footballs were trialled for a half).

Although yellow footballs quickly became the standard for night play, the NFL series continued to use the white ball in 1977-78 (and possibly 1979 as well, this still needs to be confirmed).

ROUND 1 - CLAREMONT vs SOUTH ADELAIDE
This match was originally scheduled for Subiaco Oval but, for reasons unknown, was transferred to Claremont Oval.

ROUND 1 - CAULFIELD vs AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY
A mere 250 spectators witnessed one of the biggest upsets of the NFL Championships era when the ACT team - minus their captain Kevin Delmenico - overran a strong Caulfield line-up by 19 points.

ROUND 2 - PORT MELBOURNE v QUEENSLAND
Queensland fought hard against the reigning VFA premiers but eventually lost by 31 points. A month later the Queensland side gained their revenge, defeating a VFA representative team by 7 points at the Gabba.

ROUND 2 - PORT ADELAIDE v WEST PERTH
West Perth trailed by just 12 points at quarter time but it was only Port Adelaide's poor kicking at goal that had kept the scores close. Port had 10 scoring shots in the first term but kicked 4.6, while West Perth kicked 3 goals straight. The rest of the match was a massacre with Port Adelaide kicking 21.12 to 1.3 to register a 141 point victory - the biggest winning margin of the NFL Championships era.

QUARTER FINALS - EAST FREMANTLE v PERTH
This match was originally scheduled for Norwood Oval but with two Western Australian teams involved the WAFL requested the match be held in Perth. The NFL agreed to the request and the match was transferred to Leederville Oval.

GRAND FINAL - NORWOOD v EAST PERTH
The lead changed eight times in a tight match that ebbed and flowed throughout. East Perth trailed at half-time by 10 points but controlled the third quarter, kicking 4.3 to 2.1 and entering the final quarter with a four point lead. The final term was a defensive struggle but Norwood eventually broke free and, with their home crowd cheering them on, claimed the title by 8 points.
