REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL
VICTORIAN FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION
Until now it's always been believed the VFA went into recess during 1916-17. However, research has unearthed a single game played by the Association's top players during that period.
On September 8, 1916 a match was played at Arden Street Oval between North Melbourne's 1915 premiership side and a VFA combined team comprising the best players from the other clubs. The match was in aid of ex-player Harry Todd who'd been severely injured in a mining accident and, understandably, the players were reported to be "rusty" after a year without football.
This is just one of 23 newly discovered matches involving the VFA representative team!
