1986 AFC FOSTER'S FOOTBALL CUP

*The series evolves - after four seasons of stability the format underwent major changes:

  • WAFL teams no longer took part (leaving the SANFL's top-two teams as the only non-VFL participants).
  • the Foster's Shield winners no longer took part.
  • the qualifying match between the Foster's Shield winners and the VFL's bottom-team was replaced by a 'lucky loser' system (see below).

*The trophy goes back on show - after two seasons of being presented in the rooms, the post-match trophy presentation returned to its traditional place on the arena.

*Goalkickers aplenty - the Collingwood-North Adelaide quarter final featured 17 goals... kicked by 17 individual goalkickers.

Picture
Hawthorn skipper Michael Tuck holds the Foster's Cup aloft
*Dunstall starts setting records - Hawthorn's legendary goalkicker Jason Dunstall kicked the first of many big bags in the Night Series/Pre-Season Cup, slotting 8 goals against North Adelaide in the semi-finals.

*Leading goalkicker of the series - Dunstall led all scorers with 16 goals from 3 games.

*Return of the lucky-loser - the two WAFL teams no longer taking part left fourteen teams in the opening round, meaning only seven teams would advance to the quarter finals instead of the required eight. This resulted in a 'lucky loser' system being used for the first time since the 1981 Night Series.

In 1977, 1978 and 1981 this system had allowed the losing team with the highest percentage to advance to the next round. However, in 1986 the AFC changed this to the team with the lowest losing margin. The change had an immediate, and unintended, effect when both Collingwood and Sydney lost by 26 points in the first round forcing a playoff to be held on April 22 (the AFC were lucky not have three teams tied, with Melbourne losing by 27 points).

*Swans in a fixturing fiasco - April 22 was originally a vacant week in the Night Series schedule due to the Anzac Day split round in the VFL competition. Later rounds of the AFC schedule had already been squeezed around the VFL fixture so the AFC had no option but to hold the Lucky Loser playoff on the 22nd. This left Sydney with the daunting task of playing three matches in six days:

  • Sunday, April 20 - Rd.4 premiership match
  • Tuesday, April 22 - Night Series playoff
  • Friday, April 25 - Rd.5 Anzac Day premiership match

Understandably, Sydney coach Tom Hafey chose to rest half his senior line-up for the playoff and focus on the premiership matches. [The Age 23-4-1986]

*Grand Final rollercoaster - Carlton went scoreless in the opening quarter and were held to just 3 behinds in the first half, yet only trailed by 12 points at halftime. Remarkably, they kicked 5 goals to 2 in the third quarter for a 7 point lead at the final break, only to finish the match the way they started it... scoreless; Hawthorn eventually overrunning the Blues for a bizarre 30-point victory.

AGE

NOTES:

Due to the WAFL's top-two teams no longer participating, the AFC were left with 7 winners in the first round, and 8 teams needed in the quarter finals.

This resulted in a 'lucky loser' system being used for the first time since the 1981 Night Series. In 1977, 1978 and 1981 this system had allowed the

losing team with the best percentage to advance to the next round.

However, in 1986 the AFC changed this to the team with the lowest losing margin. Both Collingwood and Sydney lost by 26 points in the first round

forcing a playoff to be held on April 22 (the AFC were lucky not have three teams tied, with Melbourne losing by 27 points).

NOTE - if the old percentage-based system had been in place, Glenelg (70.47) would have progressed instead of Collingwood (69.76) or Sydney (63.38).

April 22 was originally a vacant week in the Night Series schedule due to the Anzac Day split round in the VFL fixture. Later rounds of the AFC schedule

had already been squeezed around the VFL fixture so the AFC had no option but to hold the playoff on the 22nd.

This left Sydney with a daunting schedule that included a two-day break:

Sunday, April 20 - Rd.4 premiership match / Tuesday, April 22 - Night Series playoff / Friday, April 25 - Rd.5 Anzac Day match.

Not surprisingly, Sydney coach Tom Hafey chose to rest half his senior line-up for the playoff and focus on the premiership matches. [The Age 23-4-1986]

NOTES:

Carlton's Round 12 premiership match against Hawthorn had been scheduled for Princes Park on June 14 but the VFL transferred the match to the MCG

on Sunday, June 15 in order to maximise attendance. This meant Carlton would only have a two-day break before the Night Series semi-final on June 17.

The AFC responded by moving the match to the 24th and reducing the gap between the Night Series semi-finals and Grand Final to one week instead

of the standard two-week break.

NOTES:

Carlton were held goalless in 3 quarters and scoreless in 2 quarters yet somehow were still a chance of winning the game until the final quarter.

Remarkably, having entered halftime without a goal they kicked 5 goals to 2 in the third to lead at three-quarter-time by 7 points; then did not score

again and lost by 30 points!
