1964 GOLDEN FLEECE NIGHT PREMIERSHIP
*Back-to-back Bulldogs - Footscray joined South Melbourne (1956-57) as the only teams to win consecutive night premierships. For the success-starved Bulldogs it was just their third senior flag since joining the VFL in 1925.
*Prizemoney - Golden Fleece, the iconic Australian petroleum company, became the inaugural sponsor of the Night Series and prizemoney increased massively as a result; up from £500 to £1400 for the winning team, and from £250 to £650 for the runner-up. All of the additional funds were provided by Golden Fleece with the VFL's contribution remaining unchanged. |
*Big crowds return - the series total of 128,360 spectators was a marked increase on 1963's relatively disappointing total of 99,392.
