ABOUT

ABOUT THE 1964 SERIES

*Back-to-back Bulldogs - Footscray joined South Melbourne (1956-57) as the only teams to win consecutive night premierships. For the success-starved Bulldogs it was just their third senior flag since joining the VFL in 1925.

*Prizemoney - Golden Fleece, the iconic Australian petroleum company, became the inaugural sponsor of the Night Series and prizemoney increased massively as a result; up from £500 to £1400 for the winning team, and from £250 to £650 for the runner-up. All of the additional funds were provided by Golden Fleece with the VFL's contribution remaining unchanged.

*Leading Goalkicker of the Series - Carlton's Sergio Silvagni and Hawthorn's John Peck tied for series honours with 9 goals apiece (both played 2 games in the series).

*Big crowds return - the series total of 128,360 spectators was a marked increase on 1963's relatively disappointing total of 99,392.

TEAMS / FORMAT

PARTICIPATING TEAMS

The series featured the eight teams that missed the VFL finals series:

5th - Hawthorn
6th - St Kilda
7th - Footscray
8th - North Melbourne
9th - Richmond
10th - Carlton
11th - South Melbourne
12th - Fitzroy

They competed for the K.G. Luke Trophy (valued at £75 and donated by VFL President Kenneth Luke) with the winning team receiving a £1400 cash prize (up from £500 in 1963).

SERIES FORMAT

The teams were randomly drawn in the opening round (5 vs 8 / 6 vs 9 / 7 vs 11 / 10 vs 12) with winning teams advancing to the next stage, and losing teams eliminated from the series.
