THE HISTORY OF REPRESENTATIVE / INTERSTATE FOOTBALL

1992 Representative uniform
The sole difference from the 1991 uniform was the Pepsi sponsor patch which was updated with Pepsi's new logo/branding.

1992 State of Origin uniform
- the WAFL shield and the numbers were dropped from the jumper front.
- the Pepsi patch moved to the other side of the jumper front.
- its place was taken by a small WAFL logo and the phrase "STATE OF ORIGIN 1992".

- "EMU" sponsor patch was added to the shorts.
- WAFL logo patch on the shorts changed from a shield to a rectangle.

1993 State of Origin uniform
- the Pepsi sponsor patch returned to its usual position on the other side of the jumper front (the WAFL logo moved higher as a result).
- an AFL State of Origin patch was added to the breast of the jumper.
- the "EMU" sponsor patch was dropped from the shorts.

1994

1994 Pre-Season exhibition uniform
Between 1991 and 1994 the AFL competition consisted of an uneven number of teams (15), creating the need for a weekly bye throughout the home & away season. North Melbourne's bye in 1994 was scheduled for the opening round so their coach Denis Pagan sought a practice match against top-level opposition. The WAFL season started a week later than the AFL's, making them an ideal opponent for the Kangaroos.

The match was played as a curtain-raiser for the Grand Final of the WAFL pre-season competition, the EMU Export Cup. A key theme of the Export Cup was all WAFL clubs wearing re-imagined, pre-season versions of their traditional uniforms. Inspired by this idea, the WAFL decided to create a special one-off representative jumper, inverting the colour scheme of the State jumper.

- the gold State jumper became black and the classic black swan on the front was replaced by the swan from the WAFL logo.
- the EMU Export Cup patch appeared on the jumper front (this was also worn by all clubs participating in the WAFL pre-season competition).
- the "EMU" patch previously worn on the 1993 representative uniform returned to the shorts.
- the socks changed from black with three gold hoops to black with three thin stripes at the top.
- first collarless WA jumper since 1985.

1994 Representative uniform
The "one-off" exhibition uniform received such a positive response the league chose to wear it again for the WAFL's mid-season representative match against the SANFL.

- the EMU Export Cup patch from pre-season was dropped (the Pepsi sponsor patch changed sides of the jumper front to take its place).
- a WAFL logo was added with the phrase "STATE TEAM" underneath.
- the rectangular WAFL shield logo returned to the shorts.

1995

1995 Representative uniform
Same basic design as the 1994 representative uniform except:
- the three gold bands either side of the swan were dropped.
- the border of the Pepsi patch changed from white to dark blue (this helped give it more definition against the black background).
- white shorts worn for the first time since 1981.
- front numbers worn for the first time since 1991 (and first time they had been worn on the shorts since 1977-78).
- white trim added to the rear numbers.

1995 State of Origin uniform
- the phrase "STATE OF ORIGIN" replaced "STATE TEAM" under the WAFL logo.
- return to the standard black shorts.
- front numbers dropped from the shorts.

1996

- first use of gold numbers on black shorts since the 1977-78 State of Origin uniforms.

1996 State of Origin uniform
- the phrase "STATE OF ORIGIN" was dropped (the WAFL logo moved a little lower as a result).
- an AFL State of Origin logo replaced the Pepsi sponsor patch.

1997

1997 Representative uniform
In 1997 the WAFL competition was relaunched as "Westar Rules". This re-badging involved a new league logo (see right) and new colours. For their representative match in Hobart on June 21st, the Western Australian team wore a special Westar Rules-themed uniform against the TFL.

None of the images I have located on newspaper microfilm are clear enough to work from.

If you have access to old copies of the Football Budget, Westside Football etc from 1997, any photos of this uniform would be greatly appreciated! Please contact me if you can help.

1997 State of Origin uniform
- the WAFL logo was dropped from the jumper front and the AFL State of Origin patch changed sides.
- the rectangular WAFL logo patch on the shorts was replaced by a smaller black WAFL logo sewn into, rather than onto, the shorts.
